PNG to JPG: Convert Without Transparency Surprises

The short answer

Convert PNG to JPG when you need a broadly accepted photographic file and do not need transparency. Do not convert merely because JPG sounds smaller: the result depends on the image's dimensions, detail, colors, and how efficiently the PNG was already encoded.

The most important change is transparency. PNG can store fully or partially transparent pixels; JPG cannot. Every transparent area must be replaced with a real color during conversion.

Choose the background before converting

A transparent logo can look correct on a dark webpage and still contain no dark pixels of its own. If you convert it to JPG with a white background, pale edges may look fine on white but show a visible halo elsewhere. Pick the background that matches the destination, especially around anti-aliased curves, shadows, and semi-transparent edges.

A photographic PNG often becomes substantially smaller as JPG, but a small flat graphic may not. Converting does not resize the image, so a 5000 × 3000 PNG remains 5000 × 3000 after conversion. Metadata and encoding choices also affect the total.

Never delete the original based only on the new extension. Keep the PNG if it is the editable master or the only copy containing transparency. Treat the JPG as a delivery version.
